The collection includes correspondence from the 1830s to 1911, envelopes, list of delegates, notes on a Montgomery card club, newspaper clippings, whole newspapers, notebooks, guidebooks, periodicals, pamphlets, books, business cards, invitations, and photographs. In addition, a painting and several wallets from the collection have been remanded to the artifact collection. Of special note in the papers is a phrenological survey of W. P. Browne's head done in 1836, furnace plans for his business in Shelby County, and correspondence dealing with the business climate during the Civil War. The collection includes correspondence from a variety of individuals connected with the Browne Family. There are several letters of interest including one written in 1804 by Phineas Browne to Israel Whitteman announcing the birth of William Phineas Browne. There are also two letters to President James K. Polk. The correspondence of William Phineas Browne and Nina De Cottes, his daughter, comprise the bulk of the collection. There is other correspondence included in the collection relating to other individuals, such as William Bradford Browne, Margaret Elizabeth Warwick Stevens Browne, John Tyler Morgan and John Ives. A lawyer from Dallas County, Alabama, Morgan was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1876 and served there until his death. John Ives was born in 1750. He was involved with the Suffolk Herald in 1774. He was a made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1772, and he published select papers chiefly relating to English antiquities between 1773 and 1775. Ives died in 1842. William Phineas Browne was born July 8, 1804 and died January 13, 1869. He was born in Vermont but around the age of 18 he moved to Pennsylvania at the invitation of his cousin John B.
